TAMIL NADU HORTICULTURE MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE (TNHMI), MADHAVARAM, CHENNAI-51

Introduction:

Horticulture Training Centre (HTC) was operated at Central Polytechnic, Madras and it was transferred to the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops and shifted to Madhavaram in the year 1981 Vide G.O. Ms. No. 1567, Agriculture Department Dated 02.07.1981 offering “Two Years Diploma in Horticulture Course”

Initially, 20 students per academic year were admitted for each of the above courses. Then, six months and one year courses were abolished and the number of students were increased from 20 to 40 for the diploma course as per G.O. Ms.No.500 Agriculture (HII) Department dated 06.08.92 .

During the year 2009, Horticulture Training Centre (HTC) was upgraded as Tamil Nadu Horticulture Management Institute Under the scheme of NADPvide G.O. Ms. No. 224 Agriculture (AP1) Department Dated 16.10.2009.

There were 853 students awarded with two year Diploma course from this institute till date. The students awarded with Diploma in Horticulture from this institute are employed as Assistant Horticulture Officers in the Department of Horticulture and plantation Crops and Assistant Technical Manager under ATMA (Agriculture Technology Management Agency) scheme in Tamil Nadu Government.

This Institute is taking previlage that more than 500 students have successfully passed in Assistant Horticulture officer competitive Examinations conducted by TAMILNADU PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION and appointed as Assistant Horticulture Officers in various districts of TamilNadu in the year 2018 & also recruited as AHO’s in Puducherry union territory.

They are also being placed Garden Supervisor in Greater Chennai Corporation, Delhi Corporation and some other biggest city Corporations in India working as field Officers, Garden Mangers, Landscaping Horticulturists and Marketing Executives in the Private Farms, Seeds, Fertilizer and Plant Protection Chemical companies.

The famous industries like Ford, Hundai, Giant Gopin, Mahendra City, Nissan and other leading industries are being landscaped and maintained by these institute students. Our institute alumni students are also working as technical assistant at leading cut flower production units at Hosur and also working as Garden Supervisors in many abroad countries like Singapore, Oman, Kattar, UAE, Malaysia etc.

Five of our alumni students are working as project assistant at M/s. Masterplan Landscape Architects, Chennai and ten of our alumni students are employing as project assistant at M/s. Plantscape, Chennai.

Apart from Employment opportunities the students completing this course were becoming huge Entrepreneurs and offering more employment opportunities to other peoples.

SYLLABUS AND CURICULLUM

The Syllabus followed by TNHMI is based on Tamilnadu Agriculture University curriculum with a duration of 2 years (4 Semesters) with credit System with English has Medium of instruction.

HORTICULTURE RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE, THALLY, KRISHNAGIRI (Dt.) - 635118

Introduction:

Horticulture research and training centre (HR&TC) was started in sericulture rented building, Thally under Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops in the year of 2004. During 2015 HR&TC was shifted to own building at kooturoad village, Nellumaru road, Thally, Krishnagiri District in 2006 with an area of 22 hectares. It is located at 12.48oN and 77.50oE (Latitude and Longitude) an elevation of 930 MSL with mean temperature 13-38oC. This centre was enriched by Red loam and Sandy loam soils withhold pH of 7.68 and EC of 0.42 to 0.5 with average annual rainfall 900 mm. In this centre one year Garden Supervisor and six month Gardener courses were offered. Two year Diploma in Horticulture course was started in the year 2018 Vide G.O. Ms. No. 240 dated 28/9/2018 Agriculture (H1) with strength of 50 students.

There were 21 and 19 students awarded for the certificate courses of Garden Supervisor and Gardener respectively. Apart from the curriculum, more than 19,000 farmers from various districts of TamilNadu were trained by this centre and they learn about different horticultural technologies includes nursery, crop production, irrigation management and post harvest practices.

The Centre of Excellence for Cut Flowers also functioning here, under Indo-Israel Agriculture Project for demonstration on cut flowers production technology and impart training to farmers and Extension officials of all districts in TamilNadu and other states. Students from several Agricultural, Horticultural colleges and schools were visited and gained knowledge from this centre.

They are also being worked as Garden Supervisor and Gardener in various private companies and some of them working in other states also.

This centre felt proud to giving training and knowledge about horticulture for farming communities, youngsters and who are all interested in farming.

INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITIES AVAILABLE at HRTC, Thally.

At present, 7165 Sq.ft building is available with 4 dormitories, Dining hall, Kitchen and 7 guest rooms. Dormitories are used for the accommodation of students for one year Garden supervisor course, six months Gardener courses and farmers. Diploma students were accommodated in hostels separately. Guest rooms are used for the accommodation of extension officials those who are accompanying with the farmers.
